    Unhappy Unanswered: Oracle service starting

I have loaded oracle 8i on my workstation that is using Win 2000 and P4 processor.

I was haveing problems with database errors. So I checked the services and it just shows the service as starting

I changed it to manual and tried starting and it just times out saying it took to long for it to start

Not sure what to check next

How much memory do you have on the machine??? What is the size of the
    Oracle SGA (db_blocksize ... db_block_buffers ... shared_pool_size ... etc ...)?
Is it possible that you have a LARGE SGA and not enough memory thereby
    causing paging ???

What happens when you try and start the instance manually from command line using ORADIM ???

    C:\> oradim -start -sid .....

MS Bulletin MS04-011 (KB835732) - the one that protects you from the Sasser worm - can cause the service stuck in 'starting ...' syndrome that you see. MS issued two workarounds in this release:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=841180

both of which worked for our affected Windows 2000, Oracle 8.1.6 system. We ended up using the second method they suggested.

More problems with that patch can be found here:

Oracle 9 on Windows 2000 doesn't seem to suffer this problem.

go to start->run-> and navigate to \Oracle\Ora81\bin\SVRMGRL.EXE
Run it and type connect internal then type startup
