Unanswered: Oracle 8.1.7 power failure can't start TNS

Forgive me if I am in the wrong place. I am a complete newbie to Oracle. I have looked at so many online helps/manuals I am now confused out of my mind. So I'm not sure if I should ask this here or somewhere else.

I have 8.1.7 running on RH 7.2. It's been running fine for a month as I experiment but I just had a power failure. In trying to restart the database this seems to have restarted fine. I did however get the following log message:

Database "orcl" possibly left running when system went down (system crash?).
    Notify Database Administrator.

The problem I seem to have is restarting TNS. Here is the log:

    [oracle@test /]$ /home/oracle/product/8.1.7/bin/dbstart
    bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied

Do I need to run the Recovery Manager before starting TNS, or any other ideas?

I have no idea about Linux, but those kind of errors "Message 850 not found; No message file for product" on windows come when the ORACLE_HOME environment variable is not set

Also have a look in the listener log file, typically in the %oracle_home%/network/log/listener.log

    lsnrctl start -- errors

    Hi Guys

I was getting the same error while starting the listener after every reboot.
I found it to be the ORACLE_HOME, and even though i was entering it in manually, by typing env from the linux command line, i noticed this...

Notice the mistake!!! 10/1/0 should have read 10.1.0 Why did this happen
I am lazy and when typing in the path for this, i use tab key to auto complete.... ;-) thats why the //// get put in there.

Corrected this minor ptoblem, she starts every time now.

    Hope this helps...
