    Unanswered: equal sign not working

    Hi,
I have a Varchar2 column called username. I have some values in this column
    UserID Username
    -------- -----------
    1 john
    2 dear

When I try to query this table, only the following query works

select * from user_table where Username like '%john'

The following queries do not work
select * from user_table where Username = 'john'
select * from user_table where Username like 'john'
select * from user_table where Username like '_john'

I thought that there is some hidden character at the beginning of the name. But,

    select substr(Username, 0 ,1) from user_table

    returned
    SUBSTR(Username, 0 ,1)
    -----------------------------
    j
    d

This problem has been driving me crazy and I have not been able to find the solution on any of the earlier posts or on Google. Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vijay

What does the following query return?

    select dump(username) from user_table where userid = 1;
