Recovery of unknown database version

I'm trying to ETL some data files into PostgreSQL which I believe are sybase in origin. The problem I'm having is that I don't know very much about Sybase or the version of Sybase that these data files came from. I have a .DAT file and a .IDX file. I'm guessing that the only way to do this is to install Sybase and attempt what amounts to database recovery from these files. My theory is that, once I have a working instance, I can run the queries that I need to get the data that I need to load into PostgreSQL. I've been poking around with Sybase in VMware but, with my limited knowledge of Sybase, the process amounts to a lot of trial and error. Does anyone have any tips that might point me in the right direction?

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
