I am trying to do a similar thing, read a line from one file and use that line for something else. I can't get the code in this thread to work though???

I acutally DID a 'man read' , and 'info read' which my computer gave me a generic page saying that it is part of the bash builtin!! I also already used the other link, but I don't understand how to use 'read' to do what I would like it to do.

I did actually spend quite a bit of time searching for what I want, and testing code that I think will work. I couldn't find the answer so I came here
