can someone tell me how to extract a string from a given string

Ex :

1. /detl01/SHL/TARG/SHL

i need to start reading the directory path from the first '/' i.e.

/detl01/SHL/TARG/SHL

I.e. i need to eliminate all the previous characters.

Sooner help appreciated..

name="1. /detl01/SHL/TARG/SHL"
echo $name
name=`echo $name|cut -d '.' -f 2-`
echo $name

***********************

name="1. /detl01/SHL/TARG/SHL"
echo $name
name=`echo $name|cut -d '.' -f 2-`
echo $name

Actually it's quite more simple:

Here's another approach..

name="1. /detl01/SHL/TARG/SHL"

name1=${name#*}

echo $name1
