vim or shell ?

I am trying to remember how to solve this.

I just upgrade my linux box and now I have an issue with my
bash windows. When I am editing some file
with "vi" or "vim" its text contents are shown on
my terminal. When I close/save the file, my terminal blinks and
goes back to the command line but the text is gone (I mean,
it is saved on the file but I do not see them on my window)

I know that there is an option to avoid this but I do not remember
if this is a shell option or just a window property.

Does anyone have a hint here ?

Thanks,

S.
