Alternate for /etc/group file Urgent

Hi
I have a script in which I am using the ditect file access call ie /etc/group to get some group information..

Is there any alternate that without refering these file we can have the required information..This is for security purpose so I do not want to use this direct file access call..

I think that it's *nix flavour dependant.
