newbie question convert date field to numeric

This goes with my prior post. I set up a field to contain the date in ccyymm format. I now want to subtract 1 from it. how do i convert/treat that field like a numeric field??

Maybe you shoul try and post all you question regarding one problem in the same post...saves me from readin so much

the command "expr" is your friend in this...see my reply to your other post
